Synopsis
Georgia O’Keeffe: the Brightness of Lightis a feature documentary film exploring the life and art of the most important American woman artist of the 20th century. Known as the “Mother of American Modernism,” O’Keeffe exploded on the New York art scene in the 1920s with her paintings of flowers, bones, and thebeauty of nature. Nude photographs of O’Keeffe taken by her lover, Alfred Stieglitz, shocked the public and contributed to the perception that her paintings were sexually charged. In the 1970s, O’Keeffe, famously isolated in the New Mexico desert, emergedas an iconic role model for second wave feminists. Leading expert on Georgia O’Keeffe: authored award-winning Georgia O’Keeffe: Catalogue Raisonné (Yale University Press,1999), numerous other books and essays about the artist and her contemporaries. New book on O’Keeffe coming out in spring 2027 with University of New Mexico Press: My Life with Georgia O’Keeffe: A Memoir.
Holds doctorate in Art History and another in French Literature. Taught art history at Vanderbilt University, Dartmouth College, and Maryland Institute College of Art (1980-92). Contractor at National Gallery of Art while writing and researching Georgia O’Keeffe: Catalogue Raisonné (1992-1999).
Founding curator, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and founding director of its Research Center (1997-2014). Sunny Kaufman Senior Curator, Fort Lauderdale Art Museum (2014-2020), leaving to return to working on O’Keeffe full-time. Organized numerous exhibitions on O’Keeffe, American and European art, and lectures widely in America and Europe. Now consultant, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and honorary member of its Board of Trustees.
